This was a great series;very well written. With his constant boozing and occasional cocaine use, Ray has fallen so far that he now works for the city of Vinci, near Los Angeles, population 93 —primarily inhabited by dirty manufacturing companies that pollute everything around them. Two thumbs up. True Detective season one managed to hook us in the first hour, while season two still keeps us at a cold arm's length all the way through episode three. I can't wait for season three. In fact, season two of True Detective is woefully devoid of humor.

Los Angeles's myriad and interlocking freeways can be a metaphor for disconnected people or just lost souls going nowhere, but like everything else in these early episodes, it all feels too stylized. By the time Caspere’s murder was solved, most viewers had lost the plot and no longer cared, unwilling to accept that the season was never really about who killed Ben Caspere. Hell, the casting for season two got more ink than nearly all the pre-premiere hype of season one. But it doesn’t deserve that fate.
This has been a great series. I got admit, my eyes teared of a bit at the end. Season 2 was a bit of a disappointment as Vince Vaughn seemed a bit mis-cast and the Colin Ferrell character not as interesting as any in Season 1. Woodrugh could have been defined purely by his issues — post-traumatic stress, closeted homosexuality, a false accusation — but Kitsch finds subtlety in his body language.
Right after it happened, Velcoro turned to mobster Frank Semyon (Vaughn) for help in avenging his wife; Semyon, unsurprisingly, now owns Ray. But why choose for her to do that anyway? Season 1 Review: Often True Detective is too much about the performances–there’s something very actorly about it, setting up McConaughey in particular with set pieces and monologues that, while exquisitely written on the page and probably potent Emmy-bait, would be twice as effective if there were half as many. Its accomplishments were born of a rare alchemy that's hard to accomplish and even harder to duplicate.
Still great storylines and albeit two separate shows in themselves, I could have handled another round of the first season's plot lines.
Although Lin gives this new season a similar feel to what Fukunaga accomplished in season one — an abundance of helicopter shots, brooding opening credits and songs that soak in their own depression — it's not quite the same. That dialogue is part of the problem in the second season of True Detective. SO disappointing after watching a stellar season 1. And what we'll get is a sophomore slump. The tension in his jaw and body shows a man forcing himself to be outwardly strong in order to hide what he perceives as internal weakness. True Detective's second season employs the same flashback and time-jump elements as season one, but not nearly as confusingly, which is a bonus in the early episodes.
Season 2 stars Colin Farrell as Ray Velcoro, a cop in a fictional California city named Vinci (modeled after Vernon). Ray loves his kid (which might not be his kid), but he also isn't afraid to yell drunkenly at his son and beat up the parents of other kids who are not nice to his own. Like its characters, it got trapped in the darkness. The acting is superb. Just get through the first episode and pay attention. SHARE TWEET. Both characters are incapable of escaping their pasts, especially as their futures become increasingly dire. I found them both to be quite good. But three episodes in is still somewhat early. Tim Goodman Updated at July 13, 2015 5:30 am. Not only is it strongly negative, involves the protagonists acting in the most ridiculous way that proved their previous actions significantly more intelligent, in comparison.. Season 2 is full of gorgeous overhead shots of Los Angeles freeways, but those freeways aren’t so much linking people meaningfully as spreading poison. But the second season wasn’t bad — it just couldn’t escape the long shadow of the first. "Man of any size lays his hands on me, he's going to bleed out in under a minute," she says at one point. Rachel McAdams in a scene from “True Detective” Season 2. I hope to see more interesting stuff from this Nic Pizzolatto guy. And its tableau of political corruption feels even more relevant today than it did in 2015. Taylor Kitsch in Season 2 of “True Detective.”. But the director set the bar pretty low. Farrell plays Ray Velcoro, a troubled detective (we are reminded of this a lot) whose wife, Spencer, was trying to get pregnant before a terrible incident in which she was beaten and raped. You will never see Vince Vaughn this good. Comparing the 2nd season to the first season is a little hard because the first season was so great. But after watching the first three episodes that HBO sent to critics (of eight total episodes), the completely revamped cast of this True Detective has its work cut out for it.
And these lines were not delivered with any suggestion that we might laugh. The writing is off-beat, but weirdly fascinating. It’s a vision of Los Angeles in which pain and desperation are everywhere, pressing people until they break, and the murder of Caspere is merely a catalyst. 9:00 PM PDT 6/11/2015

Ray: "Well, if you don't have flies, you can't fly fish.". The season was so widely considered a failure, that the fate of “True Detective” seemed to hang in the balance for almost two years before a third outing was confirmed.
Ray has close ties to the career criminal Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn), and their lives are upended by the murder of a double-dealing city manager named Ben Caspere — a case that also ensnares the highway patrol officer Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) and criminal investigator Antigone Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) within a tangled web that also involved a high-speed rail boondoggle, a deadly shootout at a meth lab and secret sex parties of the political elite. Things could turn around. And now it's Ray and Ani driving together in an effort to summon the spirit of the first season's buddy road trip thing.
