First, there cannot be any change without time. What causes time? For, the past is every part of time that was once the present. “This moment” – “now” – “the present” – each of these is just a different way of saying the same thing. The present is the part of time that exists now. But then, the changing thing must have been this in this moment (M1), and that in that moment (M2). But, even then, it would only be the “process” that would go in reverse, as time itself would continue to flow forward. We just cannot say what exactly happens when time passes. It's as if everything has it's own time frame. Hence, in order for there to be change, there must be time – there cannot be any change without time. For otherwise, x could not be a part of the past – for the past is just the totality of times that had once been present. For it has no parts. But, every part of the past must once have been the present, either all at once, or part-by-part (i.e., either the whole part was the present, or else it is divided into smaller parts, each of which was the present.). By contrast, in time, the parts of time are the moments, and the “lengths” are just groups of moments.

If I were to travel into space with a clock on board my ship and I were to look back at earth - at differing distances I would see earth moving in and out of daylight hours at differing frequencies. For it is evident that the future is something separate from the present, and that the present is something separate from the past. is not a proper question according to the use of the word "time." Time is made up of two kinds of parts: lengths of time, and moments. But, since time is something that each of us knows perfectly (since each of us is aware of every part of the idea expressed by the word, “time”), even what is most hidden about time will be something that is somehow apparent, and somehow known. For even if we were not there to measure it, or to think about it, there would still be change in the world, and the flow of moments, with one coming after the next.

By this I mean: if x was a part of the past, then either x as a whole was once the present (all at once), or else each part of x was once the present – this part as a whole, and then that part as a whole, and then that part – until each of the parts of x had been the present. For the reasons above, time is not the same as our measurements of time, or as our thoughts about time. If the regularity of that flicker could be seen as say, every 10 minutes on my clock, but each flicker relates to an advance of 24 hours time on earth then my distance from earth could be calculated.

Or, put differently – what is the nature, or the essence, of a “time”? Time is the inescapable presence of consciousness. And what does that say about humans? If I had a cesium atomic clock at rest in my reference frame, and I counted x million-billion wavelengths of a certain atomic transition, wouldn't that qualify as measuring time, and indeed quantify what a second was in my reference frame?
