The comments sections for articles about and reviews of The Tunnel’s debut episode all had the same theme running through them: how pointless the show seemed, being a remake of a television programme from only two years ago and following a recent US adaptation of the same. The Tunnel Season 2 Episode 1: Series 2, Episode 1 Summary: Commander Elise Wassermann and DCI Karl Roebuck reunite to investigate the case of a French couple who are abducted from the Eurotunnel.
2.1 The Tunnel Sabotage, Elise Wasserman – Clemence Poesy (Final Portrait, 127 Hours, In Bruges, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2) Laura and Karl’s marriage had to endure a lot last season – the death of Adam and Karl’s cheating. Karl Roebuck – Stephen Dillane (Zero Dark Thirty, Game of Thrones, Secret State, 44 Inch Chest, King Arthur, The Hours, Spy Game)
Sonny Persaud – Clarke Peters (Chance, People of Earth, Jessica Jones, London Spies, Midsomer Murders, Show Me A Hero, Treme, John Wick, Person of Interest, The Wire) The Tunnel really delivered with its finish this week though, and the pay-off to Keeley Hawes’ part of the storyline. “Nothing has led to more bloodshed than religion,” Fournier tells Rosa. The Tunnel Season 1. The Roebucks are struggling – are they grudgingly coming to the realization that things can’t go on this way and are on their way to an amicable divorce? He coldly shoots his wife in the head. I’m glad we’re finally getting more episodes of The Tunnel to enjoy in the United States. The Tunnel Sabotage Season 2 Episode 1 Recap Odds and Ends: I love the team of Roebuck and Wasserman. Inside the Channel Tunnel, on the borderline between Britain and France, the body of a woman is discovered. A break through in the Karl/Elise relationship is achieved by the end of the episode when she finally succumbs to one of his terrible, dad jokes, which leads to an admission about her past. Earlier I mentioned that Stephen had evaded police attention despite having links to Gemma, but I think they’ll come calling after this. We spent a lot of time with Stephen this episode but so far he’s seemed to evade the cop’s radar, despite having links to the prostitute whose lower half was found in the tunnel. In this episode, we see the young woman, Olena, sitting at the water’s edge still sporting her bruises, holding her passport. I could certainly see their point having made my only real criticism of The Tunnel that anyone who’d seen The Bridge might have felt it was all a bit familiar. Vanessa Hamilton – Emilia Fox (The Pianist, Silent Witness, Merlin, David Copperfield, Cashback)
I was very worried that it was going to get preachy and heavy-handed – it certainly swerved in that direction, but wasn’t too bad – and when one of the attendees starts playing “Kumbaya” on the guitar – it’s a gentle, humorous nod that the characters (and writers) aren’t two-dimensional zealots. Eryka is German, raised in Chile, and speaks most European languages. This is not that out of the ordinary, but most people get over that. The Tunnel nearly bungles its shock ending with some hurried exposition as Danny Hiller receives news of the second of our culprit’s “truths”. From this witness, a sketch is compiled and broadcast by the media. But the case is complicated when a plane crashes into the Channel, killing all on board.
Olivier notes that Eryka is very composed for someone who has lost an employer/lover.
Investigation wise, Karl tracks down the diary of Gemma, the prostitute/lower half of the body, from one of her co-workers and the knowledge that she had a new, politically-minded boyfriend while Elise finds herself visiting the abattoir used to dismember the bodies. Stefan is involved in this nasty business but is made to appear more sympathetic as he gives the bride what she needs to make an escape attempt. We know from hearing Vanessa on the phone that she made Stefan’s plane reservations.
The Tunnel is distributed by Endemol Shine International in the U.S. Home media I love the team of Roebuck and Wasserman. Karl Roebuck – Stephen Dillane (Zero Dark Thirty, Game of Thrones, Secret State, 44 Inch Chest, King Arthur, The Hours, Spy Game) Thibault Briand – Nicolas Wanczycki (Love at First Fight, The Family, Me Myself and Mum, The Returned)

Episode one spent much time setting up the relationship between Karl and Elise and with more minutes devoted to Stephen and his sister this week, we don’t see as much of that partnership and the characters spend more time apart. Thibault is an admitted racist – hates both Jews and Muslim and for all those outside of those two groups, well, he’s happy to “put a bullet in their hypocritical backs.” What a sweetheart! She appears to be the broker of what we’d call a “Green Card” wedding in the United States. All apart from the lady whose been taking paracetamol for the last few weeks. Thibaut warns Rosa that when Fournier no longer has any use for her, Fournier will kill her.
The Tunnel timed this just right. It was an exhausting first episode – so many threads to track and so many characters – but it has so much intrigue that I’m happily off to see the next episode. Olivier Pujol – Thibault de Montalembert (La Setinelle, Days of Glory, In My Skin) Next Thibault takes out a Jewish boy and finally Thibault murders Aamira. When the ferry arrives in England, the power has been restored and one of the staff investigate the stalled and apparently abandoned car. His pretty assistant was meant to be on the plane with him – but a lost passport prevents her from boarding. Good characters can do bad things and vice versa. The Tunnel Sabotage Season 2 Episode 1 Recap – The premier episode of the second season opens with a grisly discovery on the beach. In the United States, The Tunnel was broadcast on many PBS stations. The Tunnel is beginning to mark out its own territory, and continues to enthrall. It’s just very disturbing. There’s laughter and excited talk about the holiday that awaits them across the channel. Next up is an early morning visit to the Roebucks.
At Suze’s nursing home, the inhabitants are dropping like flies while Stephen finds Suze in a bad way at home. When we next see Mrs. Fournier (last seen in the ferry) she is bound and with a sack over her head. He brought the briefcase with him – so is part of the plan for the passports in the briefcase to be found? Tech-savvy, highly organised, and a man with a mission – the profile of this killer begins to take shape. Vanessa Hamilton – Emilia Fox (The Pianist, Silent Witness, Merlin, David Copperfield, Cashback) Episode two does finish establishing their individual characters though. It’s much clearer this week that he runs a hostel of some sort that helps the people he takes care of. We get a glimpse of the young woman who was shown getting married and then raped and held captive, until Stefan Czyrko helps her escape.
Why did they want him to die? Even more shocking, we learn that there is a connection between Fournier and Vanessa Hamilton. Things get very ugly for the young women – she is raped and beaten. We hear a male voice saying, “Not the kid, not the kid.”. After random people find passports, university certificates, a wooden cross as well as other sundry items on the beach, the camera pivots to reveal a row of airplane seats on its side with two dead passengers still belted into their chairs. The Tunnel Sabotage Season 2 Episode 2 Recap – What is the connection between the software developer and the brides for passports ring?
Read James’ review of the previous episode, here. Laura Roebuck – Angel Coulby (Merlin, The Jacket, Vincent, Imagine Me & You, Undercover, Conviction) It deviates from the many characters already in the frame and draws us into this day in the life of Aamira, a young Muslim girl from England. In the horrific last segments of the episode we see Robert Fournier’s diabolical beta test. There are many unanswered questions, but one thing I’m pretty certain of is that Karl will follow the siren song and rejoin CID and reunite with Wasserman to get to the bottom of this case. There were two characters we are introduced to (and the episode lingers on) that will ultimately be passengers on the doomed jet: Paul Bresson – we see him preparing to accept his doctorate from the University – the diploma will be one of the items that washes up on shore and is found by the boys in the opening scene. Should she survive, Karl and Elise are likely to want a word. Directed by Dominik Moll. The Bridge dubbed its protagonist “the truth terrorist”. Stefan Czyrko – Mish Boyko (Risen, Dracula Untold, Fortitude, Silent Witness) Home; TV; The Tunnel episode 2 review; Reviews The Tunnel episode 2 review. Hawes character was one that brought us mixed feelings. She seemed happy to steal from the elderly lady in her care one moment but yet felt sorry for her lack of visitors, chastising the woman’s family for never being there. It’s a terrifying sequence. Chloe, the young daughter, is the sole occupant of the car, huddled on the floor of the back seat.
Rosa Persaud – Hannah John-Kamen (Killjoys, Tomb Raider, Black Mirror, Game of Thrones, Happy Valley, Whitechapel, Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
When the sack is removed, she sees that her husband Robert is in the room. Mike Bowden – Stanley Townsend (The Libertine, Florence Foster Jenkins, The Shadow Line, Fleming) The Tunnel Sabotage Season 2 Episode 2 Recap characters and cast include: Elise Wasserman – Clemence Poesy (Final Portrait, 127 Hours, In Bruges, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2)
The students scream and run for cover. Before we got there though, The Tunnel’s sophomore effort slowed the pace that had been set during the opener, and spent most of its run time filling in the gaps that finished setting up the story. Our perp does all this by running a video online via the UK Police server. 2.1 The Tunnel Sabotage, Elise Wasserman – Clemence Poesy (Final Portrait, 127 Hours, In Bruges, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2) Elise Wasserman is unwittingly hijacking a mandated leadership class. Vanessa Hamilton who runs the brides/prostitution/pornography/passport ring has checked in with the mysterious boss “Koba” acknowledging that she has lost a bride but that the crew are off to Calais to get more brides. 2.2 The Tunnel Episode Sabotage It was an unexpected and deliciously shocking twist. Last week’s focus was very much on the dynamic policing duo of Elise and Karl, whereas this week we saw much more of shady Stephen, the man who seemingly helps immigrants into the country. Clemence Poesy continues to impress in this role. But they don’t make it.
