The whole point of the book seemed to be that the guy came of age in a time when there was plenty of childhood freedom and the privilege of doing nothing much with his dog most of the time. Something went wrong. A nostalgic trip through the idyllic memories of a boy and his dog growing up in Mississippi in the 1940's. But I would not rate it among the best dog books I have ever read, and I'm surprised that it was made into a movie. Cute little vignettes tied together with no arc. I read it many years ago for a school report. The movie adaptation doesn't really support this because Skip becomes a Jack Russell terrier in his cinematic version. A classic "coming of age" movie about a boy and his best friend -- his dog, Skip. We'll just have to take the biographer's word on it. My dog skip is like the new movie A dog’s purpose. The writing is simple enough for her to understand, and it's short enough that she was able to read it without losing interest. The last two chapters are sweet but the rest is boring and sometimes racist. So well written & so touching. I loved the book!! Refresh and try again.
I show this to my 4th grade classes every year, and I never fail to feel a lump in my throat at the ending (and a few times during the movie, too).

This was an okay story of a boy and his dog growing up together. Thedog, which he names Skip, becomes well known and loved throughout thecommunity and enriches the life of the boy, Willie, as he grows intomanhood.
